Potatoes

“Potatoes!”

Those were the cries of my little helpers this morning as we harvested our first crop from the allotment. I had been advised by a Japanese allotmenteer to harvest the potatoes as they would rot over the winter.
So here we are… Excitedly digging them up!

The digging is significantly easier in the loam soil we have here compared to the clay on my plot in the UK. In fact I’m eager to see what I can grow on this lovely loamy soil.
I digress…
I’m pleased. The winter potatoes have done well considering they were an experiment. The plants had all been killed off by the frosts, but underground we have a nice little collection of new potatoes. There might only enough for one family meal, but I’m happy. A successful experiment!

I will definitely grow winter potatoes again- just next year I might plant them early September rather than early Oct.
